56K and V.34 Modem Strings

This is a list of common modem strings for altering your connection speed. We have listed strings for disabling all 56K protocols (including K56Flex, X2, and V.90) and limiting your upper connection speed, and for forcing V.90 as a last effort for those who can't make a high-speed connection. Anybody having connection problems should also make sure you have the latest firmware or driver for your modem. This chart is organized by modem chipset, not by manufacturer or model, since there are many manufacturers, each using multiple chipsets, sometimes even in the same models. Consult your documentation or packaging to learn what chipset your modem uses. Some strings are V.90-only, and will not work if your modem does not support V.90.

You might need to lower your maximum speed or disable 56K entirely (thereby dropping to V.34 speeds) if

  • Your modem is having trouble making any connection to the Internet

  • You are experiencing frequent disconnects

  • You cannot connect above 33.6K at all, and you are actually connecting at quite a bit less

Note: Adding 2 or 3 commas (,,,) after your dial-up number may also create a smoother connection.
