Configuring FreePPP 1.0.5

  1. NOTE: The images below show the two principle dialog boxes of FreePPP 1.0.5. These illustrate the configuration for a particular modem that may be different from your modem. Please read the accompanying text carefully.
  2. Open the "Config PPP" control panel; it will look something like...

  3. From the "Port Name" pop-up menu, select the port where your modem is connected.
  4. Make the other pop-up menus and check boxes match the ones in the illustration (except "PPP server").
  5. Click on the "New..." button. The choice of names is only important if you use multiple configurations.
  6. Click on the "Config..." button. You will see a dialog box that looks like...

  7. Select a port speed that is four times (4x) the speed of your modem. (For a 14.4 modem, you would select 57600.)
  8. Select "CTS Only" flow control.
  9. Identify whether you want to dial with tones or pulses. (You must have touch tone service to dial with tones.)
  10. Enter the phone number of the Bee.Net Point-Of-Presence (POP) nearest you. Enter it exactly the way you would dial it if you were dialing it yourself.
  11. Enter your modem initialization string. (Note: the initialization string in the example is for an AT&T Dataport modem, if you have a different modem, you may need a different initialization string. If you don't know how to create a modem initialization string, see the document "Modem Strings from TISK"; it is part of the FreePPP 1.0.5 distribution. An advantage of FreePPP 2.5 is that it will try to identify your modem for you and then suggest a modem initialization string.
  12. Click on the "Authentication..." button. A small dialog box will appear. Enter your user name and password in the dialog box. (Note: the storage of your password is not secure. If other people have access to your computer they could conceivably get your password by stealing files from your hard disk.)
  13. Click on the "OK" button to close the "Authentication" dialog box. Click on the "Done" button to close the "Configuration" dialog box. Close the "Config PPP" control panel.
