Configuring FreePPP 1.0.5
- NOTE: The images below show the two principle
dialog boxes of FreePPP 1.0.5. These illustrate the configuration for a
particular modem that may be different from your modem. Please read the
accompanying text carefully.
- Open the "Config PPP" control panel; it will look
something like...

- From the "Port Name" pop-up menu, select the port where your
modem is connected.
- Make the other pop-up menus and check boxes match the ones in the
illustration (except "PPP server").
- Click on the "New..." button. The choice of names is
only important if you use multiple configurations.
- Click on the "Config..." button. You will see a
dialog box that looks like...

- Select a port speed that is four times (4x) the
speed of your modem. (For a 14.4 modem, you would select 57600.)
- Select "CTS Only" flow control.
- Identify whether you want to dial with tones or pulses. (You must
have touch tone service to dial with tones.)
- Enter the phone number of the Bee.Net
Point-Of-Presence (POP) nearest you. Enter it exactly the way you would
dial it if you were dialing it yourself.
- Enter your modem initialization string. (Note: the
initialization string in the example is for an AT&T Dataport modem, if
you have a different modem, you may need a different initialization
string. If you don't know how to create a modem initialization string,
see the document "Modem Strings from TISK"; it is part of the FreePPP
1.0.5 distribution. An advantage of FreePPP 2.5 is that it will try to
identify your modem for you and then suggest a modem initialization
string.
- Click on the "Authentication..." button. A small
dialog box will appear. Enter your user name and
password in the dialog box. (Note: the storage of your
password is not secure. If other people have access to your computer
they could conceivably get your password by stealing files from your
hard disk.)
- Click on the "OK" button to close the
"Authentication" dialog box. Click on the "Done"
button to close the "Configuration" dialog box. Close
the "Config PPP" control panel.
